<br />
Twelve pages into my journal and I discovered some pretty interesting things about drawing and painting faces. Here are the top ten:<br />
<br />
1. I have a tendency to make the faces more round or fatter than the photo.<br />
2. I most often draw the right eye higher than the left eye. I discovered this by viewing my drawing in the mirror. Did you know that you can see your mistakes by doing this?<br />
3. I am at a total loss when it comes to painting with acrylic paint. Tube paints or paint pens...it makes no difference. Ugh!<br />
4. I overwork watercolors. I wish I could be looser.<br />
5. I love the Molotow Masking pen. I was surprised at the fine lines that it would make. I will surely use this more often.<br />
6. I love Walnut Ink, sepia tone paintings, and plan to explore this media more.<br />
7. My second love is the Derwent Intense pencils. They are so juicy and work wonderfully on the hot press watercolor paper. I used cold press paper in the past but find the results on hot press paper to be much better!<br />
8. Chalk paint (Art Deco) works well as a highlight with Derwent Intense pencils. I learned about using Chalk Paint from Kate Thompson in her Class "Fancy Lassies." She uses them with watercolors!<br />
9. Prismacolor Pencils are my favorite for drawing whimsical faces.<br />
10. Painting from and studying photos allows you to train your eye to see all the little details...the shadows, highlights and proportions. Also, the more that you practice...the better that you will become. Draw...draw...draw. I can't wait to see my progress at the completion of my journal.<br />
<br />
Aborigine Boy was drawn by using an inexpensive PaperMate 0.5mm mechanical pencil that I purchased from Target. I used a chamois to blend the background.<br />

<br />
I had a very interesting conversation with a 94 year old friend of mine who has some very old fashioned ideas about a myriad of topics, in particular "ART." We happened to be talking about how we define "art." This all came about when I started to tell her about my journal of "faces." She quickly interrupted me when I got to the part about finding my inspiration from photos of faces that I find on the internet. She said "that's not art." According to my friend, art is drawing or painting from real life figures or landscapes and not from, in her words, "copying a photo." <br />
<br />
I think that we can all agree that my friend's definition of "art" is a very narrow and shortsighted view which would leave out many of the masterpieces hanging in art galleries today but yet she is not wrong. Art is personal...It is whatever appeals to the viewer and what the viewer or artist considers to be art. If you look on the internet you will find many definitions and no two are alike. There is no right or wrong. So my question is...why did I feel that I had to defend my position as an artist?<br />

<br />
Whew! I can stop holding my breath now...hurricane Irma is gone and luckily, I have no damage to my house or yard just a lot of leaves and small tree branches strewn everywhere. And...I HAVE POWER! I am so fortunate! <br />
<br />
Many of my friends and family are still waiting for the electricity to be restored and are waiting in temperatures of 91 deg. Fahrenheit or above. Our State has never seen anything like this in our history and are just now beginning to understand its impacts. To give you an idea: All services have been interrupted and many people can not go back to their jobs because of the power outages. Streets are cluttered with yard waste waiting for the Cities and Counties to pick up the residue. Grocery stores had to throw out all refrigerated items due to spoilage and are waiting for the trucks to arrive in order to restock. Some areas are told to conserve water by limiting showers and flushing toilets and to boil drinking water (I am not one of them thank goodness). Many areas will not be able to rebuild without adhering to stricter and more costly building codes. This storm was a monster and its impact will be felt for a long time by many. <br />
<br />
I was too nervous to do any drawing during the storm and now that it is past, it's time to get back to normal. So here goes...Pumpkin girl was created using good old dependable Prismacolor pencils. My "go to" medium for coloring my whimsical girls. I love how the colors build up into a creamy satin finish. For more information on how I use <a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=3063967912359502727#editor/target=post;postID=8809326585471471667;onPublishedMenu=allposts;onClosedMenu=allposts;postNum=17;src=postname">prismacolor pencils</a> go here.<br />

<br />
I like to sketch my faces in pencil first because it allows me a lot of tweaking with the eraser. I am not trying to get an exact likeness but I am trying to get some kind of resemblance to the inspiration photo. <br />
<br />
Once I obtained the look that I was going for, I outlined the drawing using a Copic fineliner sepia pen. Then I erased the pencil lines. Prismacolors and pencil graphite don't mix, they will smear and muddy your colors, so the sepia ink works better. The ink is permanent and it gives you an outline but yet it is light enough to be covered by the colored pencil.<br />
<br />

<br />
Hope you enjoyed "Pumpkin Girl." I can't show you my inspiration photo on this one as I actually snapped a picture of this girl from the TV. I thought that she has the most interesting face shape and features. Perfect for drawing a whimsical character.<br />

<br />
Who could resist drawing this cute little boy with a fish in his mouth and a turtle hat? Not me! I took some creative license and changed it up a bit, giving him more hair, a full view of the turtle on top of his head and changed his garment to a T-shirt. This fit the page better as my page is square where the subject picture is elongated.<br />
<br />
Originally I was going to do a sepia toned ink drawing but that fish called out to me for some color...especially a metallic aqua color. After that, the color started to flow...coloring his T-shirt, the turtle and tinting his face to make it less red.<br />
<br />
I started with a Walnut-Ink background over the entire page. Once dried, I drew in the shape with a pencil and then inked it with a waterproof Uni-ball Vision pen (available at your office supply store). The fish was painted with Silk acrylic paint and the face, T-shirt and turtle were tinted using Derwent Graphitint water-soluble pencils. The white on his face was painted using Liquitex Modeling Paste mixed with white acrylic paint and then applied using a scruffy old brush.<br />
<br />
I like the way that everything pulled together and might do a whole series of paintings using this same technique. What do you think?<br />

<br />
"Blue hair girl" was painted with acrylic paint pens (Molotow and Montana) and soft body acrylic paints. I tried several techniques for applying the paints and really wasn't pleased with any of them so I kept layering and layering until I finally said...good enough! Move on! I may come back to this later.<br />
<br />
The skin tone was the hardest to paint. I tried to block the colors from dark to light, creating the medium tones by overlapping and it seemed to work until I lost the shape of the nose and had to start over. What a learning experience! With all other mediums I can see the pencil outline beneath the paints but with acrylic paint it is a different story; I lost the shape of the nose, the right eye was too high and I had to paint it over....ugggh! There are many layers of paint on this beauty!<br />

Painting faces with acrylic paints proved to be a real challenge and is something that I definitely need more practice in order to become comfortable. Maybe it would be easier with soft body acrylic paints and a paint brush as opposed to the paint markers.<br />

Until next time....<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have always loved drawing faces. When I look at my portfolio from high school, (yes, I saved them. They must be true antiques by now...lol.) it is filled with faces drawn in pencil, ink, charcoal, pastel or watercolor. I tried all the different mediums, except for oil. I never could wrap my head around painting with oils or the yucky smell of turpentine...so no oils will find their way into this journal except for the occasional oil stick which is mostly wax.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
With this journal, I hope to explore new techniques and perhaps find my identity. Will I prefer watercolor as opposed to acrylic? Will I prefer drawing whimsical faces as opposed to realism? Will I find my unique style or will I continue to follow the path of diversity? Wherever this journey takes me, I will go with eyes wide open...accepting my successes as well as failures and learning not to be too hard on myself when things don't go according to my liking.</div>

When I painted this girl in watercolor, I realized that I forgot how to paint skin tones. I am sure that there is something on the internet that explains this but a friend of mine just happened to be at my house with her inexpensive set of watercolors which had a tube of paint named, of all things, "Flesh." </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Wooo hoo! You can't find this color in artist grade watercolor so I am very grateful that she offered to share. </div>

<u>GOAT BOY</u></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
"Goat Boy" was done using a technique that I learned in Kate Thompson's "Children Of The Wild" class. It was drawn in pencil, painted and stenciled with gesso on a copy of antique ledger paper and then highlighted using a R&F oil stick.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you are interested in learning this technique from Kate, her on-line class is still available on <a href="http://jeanneoliver.com/">jeanneoliver.com</a>. I have taken classes from Danielle Donaldson, Wendy Brightbill, Kate Thompson, Jeanne Oliver and many other fine artists. Also, this site has many free videos so you may want to sign up to receive their notices even if you are not ready to join a class. </div>

<u>THE THINKER</u><br />
<u><br /></u>
This guy started out as a pencil drawing then I shaded areas with a light wash using a Stabilo Aquarellable pencil. I used a black Faber Castell Pitt big brush pen for the background. These are two of my favorite tools for shading. The Stabilo pencil is nice and juicy allowing for a very light wash to a solid black line and the big brush pen is perfect for solid black areas as it does not bleed through the watercolor paper. It is filled with India ink unlike alcohol ink pens.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Work In Progress</td></tr>

I am starting a new journal. Whoo hoo!!! I love drawing faces and decided to devote an entire journal to faces drawn in pencil, ink, watercolor, acrylic, collage...or any other media or technique I find interesting to try. I will most likely find my inspiration from the myriad of photos that I find in fashion magazines or on Pinterest. (Like the one above.) I am not interested in obtaining an exact likeness of the subject but rather concentrating on the technique, color and most important..just having FUN! <br />
<br />
This is my new "Hand-Book" journal. Squeeee! I absolutely loooove it! It is just the right size for painting faces...not too large or too small. The journal is 8.25" X 8.25", has a linen like cover, 60 acid free pages of scrumptious hot press watercolor paper and a clear pocket inside the back cover to hold notes, etc. If you are not familiar with the "Hand-Book" journals, they have a variety of sizes and come with watercolor or heavy weight buff mixed media/sketch paper. I have used both types and love them both! (Mixed media journals have a book cloth cover and come in black, red, blue, or green.)<br />

<br />
I just wanted to show you how I protect my journal from paint spills, etc. I wrap the cover in Glad Wrap! Yes...I learned the hard way. My first linen cover journal was dragged through paint by accident but I'm not panicking...it will be decorated in order to reflect the subject of the journal anyway.<br />

<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LSUyutooEGk/WT1-Ll5TufI/AAAAAAAACac/mxFZfE6SY_w_FDD_FF2Nr0qqqlCYv-slQCLcB/s1600/IMG_2859.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LSUyutooEGk/WT1-Ll5TufI/AAAAAAAACac/mxFZfE6SY_w_FDD_FF2Nr0qqqlCYv-slQCLcB/s640/IMG_2859.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
COUNTDOWN! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I am nearing the end of this journal. Only three pages remain to tell the story</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
of the Trump Administration. Three pages left to be illustrated, colored with</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Big Brush markers, watercolored, scribbled on, and splattered with paint. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I must confess, I will miss the daily routine of waking up each morning </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
to check the "breaking news" that occurred while I slept but I also </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
need to say that following politics is stressful and I could use a break!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Whoo boy! The drama never ends!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Somehow, I have the feeling that the story will go on long after I have </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
completed my journal and that I could fill many, many more journals </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
but seriously...I am ready to move on.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
That said, I have purchased a new "Hand-Book" journal and I am excited to </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
announce that it will be filled with my favorite thing to draw, "Faces." </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So...stay tuned and check back often as I will post my progress and also discuss </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
the many on-line classes that I know you will just love. </div>

<br />
I am moving right along in this journal. Only eight pages to go and then I will need to decide if I am going to continue reporting in a new journal. I THINK NOT! To tell the truth, I am ready to move on to something else…maybe painting abstracts and using acrylics. I love the Dina Wakley acrylics and can't wait to start experimenting with them.<br />
<br />
If you haven't tried Dina's paints yet, do yourself a favor and buy a tube. They are different from other acrylics as they are highly pigmented and can be watered down and used like watercolors without losing their intensity. Plus, the colors are scrumptious. Love, love, love!!! And…did I mention that you can buy a writing tip that screws onto the end of the tube so that you can draw and write with them? lol…I guess that I can't hide how excited I am about them. <br />
<br />
Here are more pages from my journal using the Faber Castell Pitt Big Brush pens and finishing with splashes of watercolor. I am really loving the india ink in these pens. The ombre letters below were made by first outlining the letters with a waterproof black pen, using a brush to wet the interior of the letter, and then inking the bottom of the letter while blending the ink with a paint brush. Yes, the india ink can be watered down with a wet paint brush if you are quick. Once the ink dries…it is permanent.<br />

OK, are you beginning to see a pattern here? Every page has a black horizontal line, collage and lots of paint spatters. I do this for a reason. The black line is my jump start to drawing on a blank page... the collage and paint spatters are added to provide continuity and visual interest. If I don't know what to draw before I start a page, an idea will magically appear by the time I draw the black horizontal line and maybe a few colors and patterns. My favorite saying is…put pen to paper and let the creative juices flow! This is my way of letting my muse take control and sitting back to see what the page will reveal.<br />

<br />
Just a note about how I drew the faces. First, I always draw from a photo because it allows me, if needed, to use a grid system to help with the proportions. Second, I lightly sketch the face in pencil on deli paper and keep working it until I feel happy with the likeness. I consider this step a practice run and worry later about how I am going to transfer the faces to the journal page or canvas. I will either cut and paste the pencil drawing onto the page or graphite the back of the drawing, trace and transfer to the page and then redraw in pencil or ink.<br />
<br />
Why draw on deli paper in the first place you ask? Because it is super easy to erase on deli paper using a kneaded eraser and the paper is so durable that it will allow erasing many times before it breaks down. The watercolor paper in my journals will not allow this much abuse. Sometimes, it takes many, many tries before I can get the likeness right. Hopefully, I will get better with practice and won't need to depend on the eraser so much.<br />
<br />
For this page, I decided that I didn't want to redraw the faces so I cut them out and glued the faces directly to the journal page. This was done by coating both the back and front (in this sequence) of the drawing with Golden soft gel matte medium, letting it dry, and then gluing it to the page. This method served my objective of sealing the pencil drawing and preventing the deli paper from wrinkling.<br />

Thank you for stopping by. I am now more than half way through the pages in this journal and I still have a lot more to journal about. Will I run out of blank pages before things calm down with the Trump Administration or will this turmoil stop before I complete the last page? Care to guess?<br />

<br />
We are truly living in troubled times. A time where the state of mankind and the future of Democracy is being questioned. The Country is divided by those who believe that their life will be better off by undoing years of legislation brought about by past administrations and by those who believe that America, with all its faults, is already the best Country in the world and only needs tweaking. I didn't realize how much the division of our Country was impacting my life until I found myself being an activist instead of spending time doing what I love most...making art. <br />
<br />
With that said…I decided to start a new journal. I bought an 8" x 5" "hand-book" watercolor journal a while back with the intention of using it for urban sketching but when I saw <a href="https://www.instagram.com/debweiersart/?hl=en">Deb Weiers</a>' wonderful illustrations that juxtapositions clean hardline graphics with grungy, I changed my mind. You see…I was once a graphic illustrator early in my career and of late have wrestled with blurring hardline art with the energy created by scribbles, splashes and dribbles of paint. If I had accidentally dripped paint on a graphic illustration…I would have immediately set out to remove it!<br />
<br />
To begin my journal, I decided to set some rules for delivery: The pages were to be used in a landscape format and the painting to utilize both pages. Also, the spread would have a bold horizontal line of some sort, have collaged material and decorative lettering. The materials used would be Faber Castell India Ink Big brush pens, pencil, fine permanent ink black pen (Uniball Vision), Uni-ball Signo white pen and watercolor. Just a note: The Big Brush pens do not bleed through the paper as they are made with india ink and not alcohol ink. I also learned that if you are quick, you can move the ink around with a wet brush. This worked great when blending small areas like faces.<br />
<br />
Now…at first I didn't intend this to be a journal of my political take on the events of the Trump Administration but my first page kind of set the tone when the word "PEACE" appeared and then I wrote "went underground." What was my subconscious mind trying to tell me? Maybe, that I should record/preserve the events as I interpret them and happen to see them unfold? To record for future generations the events as they occur and where no history book will take the time to tell the tale? Whatever the reason, I found it exhilarating to just run with it and see where it takes me.<br />
<br />
Besides the art that you see on these pages, I am creating a separate page of text to explain the event portrayed on each page. The page of text will then be inserted into a clear plastic envelope (came with the journal) that appears at the back of the journal. The journal will be a time capsule of sorts that will hopefully be found by an interested person long after I have exited this earth. <br />
<br />
Can you think of other ways to create a time capsule like this? Maybe a time capsule of your child's life or a time capsule of the many places that you have visited or lived? I hope that you are inspired by my journal just as I have been inspired by Deb Weiers wonderful works of art. Why not give it a try and tell your story?<br />

I am not posting it for its political content but instead I am posting it for its artistic value. So, if you are inclined to leave a comment that is political in nature, I may find it necessary to delete it. Please respect that we all live on the same planet and need to embrace our differences...just as we embrace our differences in our preference for art.<br />
<br />
These two ladies were painted to look like the posters by <a href="http://www.openculture.com/2017/01/download-print-free-shepard-fairey-protest-posters-for-the-trump-inauguration.html">Shepard Fairey</a>. Head to toe body painting! Aren't they incredible? I wish that I had written down the name of the artists/art group as I would have given them the credit that they deserve. <br />

Like the garland that was to be made of cork, wire, seed pods and beads. I discovered that it was going to take more effort than simply threading a needle with twine and piercing the used corks and seed pods. They need to be drilled! Anyway, I thought that I would show you some of my projects and explain how they were made. (Even though it is only two days before Christmas…maybe the techniques could be used for other holidays.)<br />
<br />
<u>MY CHRISTMAS CARDS:</u><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kSxJ_XQeY8w/WF1SgbyvVJI/AAAAAAAACRE/Osw8O3xJu9wMsYqkus49AYSpQHxJ72BXwCLcB/s1600/IMG_2451.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kSxJ_XQeY8w/WF1SgbyvVJI/AAAAAAAACRE/Osw8O3xJu9wMsYqkus49AYSpQHxJ72BXwCLcB/s640/IMG_2451.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
Materials used: 140 lb. watercolor paper, rubber cement, watercolor paints and white Signo Uniball pen (for snowflakes).<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Optional - Tape the watercolor paper to a board if you desire a white border around the edge of the card. I made them both ways and prefer the look of a border.</li>
<li>Drip the rubber cement onto the watercolor paper in a pattern resembling a tree. </li>
<li>Allow the rubber cement to dry thoroughly.</li>
<li>Once dry, paint the tree, background, star, ground etc. with watercolor paints. I like to splash water and add salt to obtain a splotchy look. This needs to be done when the watercolor is still wet.</li>
<li>When the watercolor is dry, rub the rubber cement off the paper to reveal the white negative space. I sometimes blot the card with a white tissue to make sure that there aren't any hidden wet areas. These will smear over the white area and ruin your card if you are not careful.</li>
</ul>
<div>
<u>WOODEN ORNAMENTS:</u></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I have always been intrigued by the laser cut wooden ornaments but I didn't like the look of painting them with acrylic paint so I decided to doodle instead with a black Uni-ball Vision or Micron pen. No need to seal first unless the slight feathering bothers you. It doesn't matter to me!</div>

<u>A CHRISTMAS JOURNAL:</u></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Last year I made a Christmas Journal from an Einstein Bagel paper coffee cup. This year it's Starbucks with pages made from Trader Joe's Holiday grocery bags! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PyXAarD_ldQ/WF1o8Rw-IFI/AAAAAAAACSo/Th4QvZLfl8M08zBCtb5whvu7T-AXVx-rQCEw/s1600/IMG_2425.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PyXAarD_ldQ/WF1o8Rw-IFI/AAAAAAAACSo/Th4QvZLfl8M08zBCtb5whvu7T-AXVx-rQCEw/s640/IMG_2425.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>First, you need a Starbuck's paper cup with a cozy. Mine is the medium size.</li>
</ul>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OHgjr1yptMI/WF1edysDbKI/AAAAAAAACSI/108Pt6LyiOMlnSpCnU8ysEIi3Prw2aBOACLcB/s1600/IMG_2444.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OHgjr1yptMI/WF1edysDbKI/AAAAAAAACSI/108Pt6LyiOMlnSpCnU8ysEIi3Prw2aBOACLcB/s400/IMG_2444.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<ul>
<li>Next, flatten the rim of the cup to get an idea where you would like the opening to be…then cut the lip and bottom off. Cut the opening on the right hand side and with the cup folded in half, even up the two halves so that they match.</li>
</ul>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-modMzaxmEy0/WF1ed8rySLI/AAAAAAAACSM/EfGIehJ24jonfddTFtPKUkm9qVxAzprUACLcB/s1600/IMG_2446.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-modMzaxmEy0/WF1ed8rySLI/AAAAAAAACSM/EfGIehJ24jonfddTFtPKUkm9qVxAzprUACLcB/s400/IMG_2446.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Now, you are ready to make the pages. Like I mentioned previously, I used a Holiday paper bag from Trader Joe's. I first cut the bottom off and slit the side in order for the bag to lay flat. (Of course, you could use any paper of choice. Pretty scrapbook paper, lined note book paper, or watercolor paper are other options.)<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>To make the pages, use the opened cup as a template and trace onto the paper bag. Cut out the pages. I wasn't worried where the seams of the bag were located as I knew that ironing them afterward would crisp them back up. Also, I concentrated on the layout of the designs on the bag instead of where the seams lined up on the page.</li>
</ul>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jlPpEzEdJ8g/WF1eebkylXI/AAAAAAAACSQ/dTX1xlPsG9Ap4HRmanVAf2HsIax9HfTvwCLcB/s1600/IMG_2448.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jlPpEzEdJ8g/WF1eebkylXI/AAAAAAAACSQ/dTX1xlPsG9Ap4HRmanVAf2HsIax9HfTvwCLcB/s640/IMG_2448.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Stack the pages and stitch them to the cover using a pamphlet stitch. There are lots of tutorials on line to show you how to stitch them together so I won't go into it here. I used DMC #5 cotton embroidery thread which I first waxed with beeswax. These can be found in the notion's department of JoAnn's Fabrics.</li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-F-Jeo8_qAsI/WF1v6F02EkI/AAAAAAAACTA/hR0tAYm7KhgfpjWHLITTFowEqpOSuaYXQCLcB/s1600/IMG_2426.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-F-Jeo8_qAsI/WF1v6F02EkI/AAAAAAAACTA/hR0tAYm7KhgfpjWHLITTFowEqpOSuaYXQCLcB/s640/IMG_2426.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<ul>
<li>For the closure, I made a loop with elastic cord and glued it to the back cover with E-6000 glue. I then covered it with part of the cup cozy. I will eventually stitch around the edge of the cozy by machine but haven't gotten around to that. Whew boy! Time got away from me! </li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FdKFVL59omw/WF1o7h2q16I/AAAAAAAACSg/VZ5WuZkUl6kTYZklwbH3vo_82aXN02npgCLcB/s1600/IMG_2427.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FdKFVL59omw/WF1o7h2q16I/AAAAAAAACSg/VZ5WuZkUl6kTYZklwbH3vo_82aXN02npgCLcB/s400/IMG_2427.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<ul>
<li>I found the perfect rustic looking button, made a heart shape with the remainder of the cup cozy and hand stitched both in place (covering the Starbuck's logo). In case you are wondering…I did glue the heart in place and added reinforcement on the inside cover to prevent the button from pulling off through use. </li>
</ul>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PyXAarD_ldQ/WF1o8Rw-IFI/AAAAAAAACSo/TJOCxVn_s4gcvHnIaOoIIQftB7yNBp5cgCLcB/s1600/IMG_2425.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PyXAarD_ldQ/WF1o8Rw-IFI/AAAAAAAACSo/TJOCxVn_s4gcvHnIaOoIIQftB7yNBp5cgCLcB/s400/IMG_2425.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
There you have it! A Christmas Journal ready to decorate and write about your favorite Holiday memories of 2016!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here are just a few of the decorated pages….</div>

Now..time to make my Pizzelle cookies. I already ate a dozen or so and need to make another batch. The recipe above is for the regular cookies using sugar and wheat flour but I make a killer gluten free and Stevia Pizzelle. I swear...I did not gain a pound pigging out on cookies! Thanks to Stevia! Yay!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Wishing you and your family a very Happy Holiday Season and a year of hope and good health in the coming year…2017! </div>

Until next time….</div>

Does this look like it could be a Christmas card? Well…that was the intention but after I finished it, I felt that it was a little too weird to send to friends and family. After all...a card is a gift and as such shouldn't it be something for the recipient to enjoy and therefore, be a reflection of their tastes and not necessarily mine? Maybe if I change out the crown for a wreath of holly and berries. Anyway, just a thought and maybe I will modify it for next year.<br />

Now...on to making the cover for the journal and it will finally be complete. (Only several years in the making.) The cover will be fabric with a transfer of one of the collage pages and maybe some quilting. That will be a post for another time.<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Does this ever happen to you? </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
You start a collage and don't finish it because you know something is not right. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
You wait for inspiration to come but it never does. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then finally inspiration strikes…only to take you in a completely </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
different direction! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I started the page below over a year ago and didn't complete it because the </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
colors and composition just didn't "speak to me." </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I love bright colors...it's no wonder that the neutral tones just seemed blah! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Also, I felt that the composition was boring because the oriental people </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
are too much the same size…it needs a large focal point to add interest. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Soooo…it demanded a "do over."</div>

<br />
This is one of my favorite collages. I think that it is because of the dark background. It's bold…it's rich…and it demands your attention. I just love contrast! Don't you?<br />
<br />
<u>Here is a tip that I would like to share:</u><br />
<br />
The white lettering is done using a UniBall Signo UM-153 pen which is a water soluble gel ink that sometimes rubs off the page through handling with damp fingers. Has this happened to you? If it has a great solution is to use Tim Holtz Distress Glaze. Distress glaze is a water resistant sealer that is for use with distress inks, markers, stains, watercolor and other water reactive paints. It has a greasy/wax like consistency that you rub over the painted surface using your finger and buff when dry. Thus...making the surface water resistant. I love this stuff! It is a bit pricey for a little 1 oz. jar but I have used it on everything and hardly put a dent in it. It should last a long time.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PzrR4yH4Wyo/WAACiacpTCI/AAAAAAAACPE/7G1ELkVpjgAFRT5N-McDMvvz8Oy0SXEAQCLcB/s1600/IMG_2304.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PzrR4yH4Wyo/WAACiacpTCI/AAAAAAAACPE/7G1ELkVpjgAFRT5N-McDMvvz8Oy0SXEAQCLcB/s400/IMG_2304.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
Those of you who are fans of Teesha Moore's work will recognize bits from her collage sheets. The face is borrowed from my own art work.<br />

I will be posting over the next few days several collages that I finished many months ago and for some reason just didn't get around to posting. <a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cXWo0G1Oz4Y/VhmR4QjhM5I/AAAAAAAACLI/h4FCRlhYZ0s/s1600/IMG_2077.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cXWo0G1Oz4Y/VhmR4QjhM5I/AAAAAAAACLI/h4FCRlhYZ0s/s320/IMG_2077.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I call these the "cupcake girls" but I really should call them the "paper napkin girls" because that is what they are made from…decorative paper napkins! <br />
<br />
I first painted the background with acrylic paint and next painted the faces and hair. Except for a few doodles in the background, everything else is patterned by using napkins. Easy peasy!<br />
<br />
The technique for the faces are borrowed from Danielle Donaldson's book " <a href="http://www.amazon.com/CreativeGIRL-Mixed-Media-Techniques-Artful/dp/1440340129/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1464552009&sr=8-1&keywords=creative+girl+mixed+media">Creative Girl</a>." <br />

<br />
The technique for the faces below are borrowed from Karen O'Brien in her book "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Imaginary-Characters-Mixed-Media-Painting-Techniques/dp/1440340250/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1464552113&sr=8-1&keywords=imaginary+characters">Imaginary Characters</a>."<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>"Whatever you are…be a good one."</i><br />
<i><br /></i>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
Sorry….I have been "MIA" for a while and I have lots to share with you all. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
First, I have been finishing up my "Teesha style collage journal." Which is taking FOREVER! I think that I have been struggling with it because my interests have changed. I have been exploring different medias such as watercolor and acrylic abstract. Never, ever would I have dreamed that I would be interested in abstract painting…well, I am here to tell you that I have a 36" square canvas hanging over my fireplace just waiting for me to add more layers of paint and to call it finished.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I sometimes wish that I was an artist that concentrated on one media and style but I want to do it all!!! Watercolor, acrylic paints, inks, crayons, pencil, abstract, collage, whimsical, portraits…all of it! </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Second, I have been busy taking Danielle Donaldson's "All Creatures Lovely And Small" on-line watercolor class and fell in love with watercolor again! I have her book "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/CreativeGIRL-Mixed-Media-Techniques-Artful/dp/1440340129/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1464553632&sr=8-1&keywords=creative+girl+mixed+media">Creative Girl</a>, Mixed Media Techniques For An Artful Life" but Wow...her video's are so jam packed with techniques and tips that I somehow didn't pick up from the book. Don't get me wrong….the book is fantastic and I would recommend anyone interested in painting like Danielle to add it to their library but also think about taking one of her classes because seeing how she actually paints her girls and little animals will get you painting in no time! More about this fantastic teacher and her class in a future post.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Now…on to "Swamp Girl." lol. Those of you who have ever ordered anything from Teesha Moore will recognize the donut packing tape (or something similar) at the top of the page…I save everything for future use! Also, there are a few pieces of her collage papers here and there. And…of course, swamp girl needed a few "worm" doodles dripping down the page to make it complete. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Finished collage</td></tr>

<br />
This is the collage prior to the pen work. I hope you can see that it really didn't take a whole lot of pen work to change it up.<br />
<br />

<br />
This is my kitchen before the remodel. It had pickled oak cabinets, tropical brown granite countertops, dated wallpaper, a soffit and built-in bench seat. It really wasn't too bad but when I started to think about all the things that didn't work…I decided that it needed a total gut job! Things such as...you could never find anything in the pantry, a drawer opened into the stove handle (why do builders do that?), and the corner cabinet was completely useless as it did not have a turn table and the door was only 12" wide. I could no longer fit my aging body in there to extract things located towards the back. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Dilghzv9yV0/VoAJAipl0qI/AAAAAAAACL4/OHtntsrGYPo/s1600/IMG_2091.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Dilghzv9yV0/VoAJAipl0qI/AAAAAAAACL4/OHtntsrGYPo/s640/IMG_2091.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-V1_bYCNtPrk/VoAJAohk4TI/AAAAAAAACL8/DjjMOLaVO0Y/s1600/IMG_2092.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-V1_bYCNtPrk/VoAJAohk4TI/AAAAAAAACL8/DjjMOLaVO0Y/s640/IMG_2092.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
So this was the plan…get rid of the soffit, bench seat and pantry. Put in new 42" cabinets that reach to the ceiling in a darker, richer color with a lighter countertop and wood floor. Add new stainless steel appliances, extend the countertop and add lots of lighting for ambiance and doing tasks. <br />
<br />
Now that it is done, I live in my kitchen! It is soooo functional. The new appliances are awesome and the big peninsula is perfect for working on large art projects. I gained a lot of space by getting rid of the pantry, moving the stove a foot, extending the counters and cabinets into the breakfast room and utilizing a counter depth refrigerator. Although, I lost the pantry…I don't miss it one bit as the huge drawers make it much easier to see everything stored. Hopefully this will cut down on wasted food that was always getting lost or hidden in the old pantry.<br />
<br />
All the finishes came together perfectly. I found the perfect fabric from Joann's for the valance over the sink, the stone and glass tile backsplash mirrors the lines of the shutters and match the granite and the teal accent wall with the chalkboard doors add a bit of contrast and whimsey. <br />
<br />
Are you ready to see the final result? Here it is…ta-dah!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />

<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Well…I hope that you enjoyed the tour and until next time….<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: justify;">Wow! It's been a while since I posted. I have been going through a kitchen renovation, including new floors in my great room…a complete gut job! I have to tell you…I think that it has been the most stressful thing that I have ever gone through in my whole life! Why? I think that it is because as an artist I see every little thing that is out of kilter. The electrical outlets didn't line up, the appliances were not installed correctly, the cabinets according to the granite installers were not level and therefore, the granite countertops did not square up with the cabinet and so on and so on. I even made the granite installers come back and lower one end of the countertop to be parallel with the cabinet drawers. They may have made them level but they did not take into consideration how all the combined elements can trick the eye and make things appear as they are not. It actually looked like the granite curved up at the end. I know that I am a perfectionist and that I have a tendency to expect the same from others but…Hey!…who has to live with this and see it every day? ME! </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
All that said and done, I owe a lot to my kitchen contractor…he and his staff came to my rescue on more than one occasion. I think that he tried to warn me in the beginning when he said "have patience" and I tried to warn him when I told him that I will drive him crazy because I am a detail person. lol!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I will post before and after pictures once I have the backsplash installed. It really is stunning!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I wish that I could say that making art de-stressed me but to be honest, I couldn't concentrate on my art when so much was happening with my house. I didn't so much as pick up a pencil and doodle but here is a collage that I completed before the reno started: </div>

Now, I couldn't just leave the baseball cards in their original context…could I??? I have a rule that I have to touch the pen to every piece of collage and change it in some way. It may be to add dots or shading or to change it entirely. I thought that the little martian heads were a nice touch. What do you think?</div>

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-o6N2e167EAU/Vhl6_nlJsiI/AAAAAAAACHo/LRzkbvw0iYw/s1600/IMG_2037.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-o6N2e167EAU/Vhl6_nlJsiI/AAAAAAAACHo/LRzkbvw0iYw/s400/IMG_2037.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>"If you really want to fly, you need to </i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>let go of the things that weigh you down."</i></div>
<br />
This collage started with images borrowed from two of my original paintings; the girls face and a shirt borrowed from "Frida"….a page from my journal of famous woman. I hoped to challenge myself by using materials from sources other than magazines and collage sheets by others….and did I say that I wanted to challenge myself? This was definitely a challenge! I was not inspired in any way by the grouping of collage pieces but as I added paint and Prismacolor pencil, it began to reveal its character.<br />
<br />
This collage taught me that you can change the color of practically anything to enhance its presence and to balance the composition.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">finished collage</td></tr>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Collage prior to mark making.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I hope that this inspires you to try using some of your art work in your collage pieces.<br />
<br />
Until next time…<br />
